Almost 20% of Americans live in rural America. These Americans love the freedom and lifestyle available in our country’s wide open spaces. But, while there are many advantages to the rural lifestyle access to physician specialists is an issue for residents that have an ailment that requires being cared for by physicians such as cardiologists. Due to the long distances required for travel patients are either unable to make the long trek or simply refuse to travel for care. This results in the patient’s health deteriorating to the point they require hospitalization, if they are lucky. While the patient suffers our healthcare system is also affected with additional financial burdens due to treating a seriously ill patient vs. monitoring a relatively healthy patient. The advent of technology such as telemedicine provides a solution to these rural patient’s dilemma of how to receive specialty care in rural America. HCI is working with George Washington University Physicians to provide world class university physician specialists to patients in rural America.
